AACC appoints new dean of student services

Anne Arundel Community College in Arnold, Md., has appointed Ivan L. Harrell, Ph.D., as dean of student services.

Harrell earned a doctorate from Florida State University, a Master of Education degree from Vanderbilt University and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wittenberg University.

He has 10 years of experience in student services with expertise in student retention and success, behavioral intervention and strategic planning. Since February 2006, Harrell served as coordinator for student affairs at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College in Richmond, Va. He worked at Tallahassee Community College in Florida from 2003-2006 as assistant to the vice president in the division of student affairs.

His professional activities include serving as vice chair of the Virginia Community College System Council of Deans, committee service and memberships with the American Educational Research Association, Association for Student Judicial Affairs, National Association of Student Personnel Administrators and Southern Association for College Student Affairs. Harrell is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. and participated in the 100 Black Men Read Program and Richmond Chamber of Commerce Greater Richmond Challenge.
