AACC Business Plan Competition has $3,000 in prizes for alumni, students

The Entrepreneurial Studies Institute at Anne Arundel Community College is hosting its 7th annual Business Plan Competition this spring to showcase former and current students’ plans for new business ventures. 

Sponsored by BB&T Bank, the competition is open to all AACC students in good standing who are currently enrolled in at least one credit or noncredit class or who completed an AACC course between April 1, 2009 and March 31, 2010. Groups of two or more participants may enter the competition if at least half of the team members meet the enrollment criteria.

Students compete for cash prizes. The winner will receive $3,000 plus the opportunity to move his or her business operation to AACC’s student business incubator, “The Hatchery,”rent free for the first year. The Hatchery is in the Careers Center building on the Arnold campus.

“Winning the money was great but moving into The Hatchery has been far more valuable,” said 2009 competition winner Christian Hendricks, owner of Sagitta Marketing LLC. “The resources and advisers have helped me get my business in the black in less than nine months.”

The deadline to submit a proposal is 12 p.m. April 2. The plan must be original and may involve a new startup venture, a new product or market development of an existing venture less than three years old. Presentations should mock an investor presentation seeking a specified investment or loan for a proposed return.

The final competition presentations take place before an audience at 8 a.m. April 29, on AACC’s Arnold campus. Three to five finalists will present their plans and answer questions from a panel of judges comprised of entrepreneurs, investors, commercial lenders and entrepreneurial scholars.
