Anne Arundel Community College receives diversity award

Anne Arundel Community College recently received the 2015 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education.

As a recipient of the annual HEED Award — a national honor recognizing U.S. colleges and universities that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion — AACC will be featured, along with 91 other recipients, in the November 2015 issue of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine. This is the first year AACC has been named as a HEED Award recipient.

“AACC is committed to meeting the needs of a diverse and global community,” said Dr. Dawn Lindsay, president, AACC. “Inclusivity is one of several goals under the college’s strategic plan, and we have made substantial progress toward achieving greater equity on campus. We are truly excited to have been selected by INSIGHT Into Diversity for this prestigious award, and are confident it highlights our success – and reaffirms our strong commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.”

INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine selected AACC for the college’s comprehensive and strategic response to an increase in student diversity, including the wide range of diversity courses offered in its curriculum, a strong commitment to community outreach and the hiring of the college’s first Chief Diversity Officer .

“The HEED Award process consists of a comprehensive and rigorous application that includes questions relating to the recruitment and retention of students and employees — and best practices for both — continued leadership support for diversity, and other aspects of campus diversity and inclusion. We take a holistic approach to reviewing each application in deciding who will be named a HEED Award recipient. Our standards are high, and we look for institutions where diversity and inclusion are woven into the work being accomplished every day across a campus,” said Lenore Pearlstein, publisher of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine.

Other recipients of the 2015 HEED Award include the University of Maryland, Baltimore, and the University of Maryland, College Park.
