Ballard Spahr’s first firm-wide United Way campaign, which drew contributions from lawyers and staff in all 13 of its offices, raised nearly $700,000 to support causes ranging from child advocacy and education to the arts and medical research, firm chair Mark Stewart announced.
One hundred percent of the firm’s partners – along with lawyers and staff across the firm – contributed to the campaign, which United Way representatives said was one of the most successful in the nation by a law firm. Most law firms’ charitable giving efforts are regional in scope. Ballard Spahr is one of the few firms to mount a unified, national campaign.
“The energy surrounding our campaign and the extraordinary generosity of the people who work here allowed us to come together as a firm to make a positive impact beyond anything we have done before,” Stewart said. “It’s a great feeling.”
As an incentive to contribute during the December campaign, the firm raffled off an array of prizes, including tickets to concerts and sporting events, certificates for dinner at area restaurants, trips and electronics. In addition, lawyers and staff were encouraged to recommend charities that held personal meaning for them. That information accompanied the electronic giving packet to assist those looking for suggestions on where to give.
“We are grateful for dedicated corporate partners like Ballard Spahr who, as they state in their mission, are committed to delivering results beyond the ordinary,” said Peter Hahn, a spokesman for United Way. “That’s the kind of partner we need to improve the education, income, and health of our communities.”
Ballard Spahr is known for its commitment to giving back to the communities in which its lawyers and employees live and work. The firm donates tens of thousands of hours of free legal services to low-income families and nonprofit organizations each year. Since the firm opened its Baltimore office in 1992, its attorneys have provided more than 30,000 hours in pro bono legal services to the community, and 75 percent of attorneys in the office serve on the boards of local nonprofit organizations. Together, attorneys and staff in Baltimore have helped renovate a city school, served meals to the homeless, assisted with community clean-up efforts and stocked a school library with books.
“The lawyers and staff in this office are deeply committed to the city and to doing whatever we can to help it grow and thrive,” Jon M. Laria, managing partner of Ballard Spahr’s office in Baltimore, said. “Baltimore is much more than the place where we do business. It is home.”
