Ballard Spahr partner elected secretary of American College of Real Estate Lawyers

Roger D. Winston, managing partner of Ballard Spahr’s Bethesda office and a real estate attorney known for his work with condominiums and mixed-use developments, has been elected secretary of the American College of Real Estate Lawyers (ACREL). The college is the premier organization of United States real estate lawyers.

Winston served for six years on ACREL’s Board of Governors and, as secretary, will serve on its Executive Committee. An ACREL fellow since 1994, he has served as chair of the College’s Common Interest Ownership Committee, Member Selection Committee and Member Development Committee. Attorneys are elected as fellows based on their outstanding legal ability, experience and standards of professional and ethical conduct, and for their contributions to the real estate legal community through speaking, writing, teaching and mentoring.

“ACREL stands for the highest standards in the practice of real estate law, and it’s an organization I’m proud to be a part of,” said Winston, who leads the firm’s Mixed-Use Development and Condominiums Team. “I am humbled and honored to have been selected to be an officer of ACREL and very much look forward to the opportunity to contribute further to this stellar organization.”

Winston has been practicing law for more than 30 years. At Ballard Spahr, he represents developers, investors and lenders in the planning, development, due diligence and restructuring of many forms of mixed-use and condominium projects. These projects include residential, retail, office and conversion condominiums, planned communities, senior housing projects, and traditional neighborhood developments, as well as many other variations of residential, nonresidential and mixed-ownership developments.

Winston has written and lectured extensively on common interest development law. He is a past chair of the American Bar Association’s Real Property, Trust and Estate Law Section and a life director of the Maryland National Capital Building Industry Association. He also serves on the Advisory Board of the Washington District Council of the Urban Land Institute and is a life member of the Maryland Fellows of the American Bar Foundation.

He is a graduate of the University of Maryland, the University of Maryland School of Law and the Georgetown University Law Center.
