Gov. Martin O’Malley has named Harry Weiss, a Ballard Spahr partner, as one of 13 members of the Governor’s advisory panel that will study natural gas drilling in the Marcellus Shale in Western Maryland.
Weiss is active in the oil and gas leasing bar in connection with Marcellus Shale development in Pennsylvania.
Gov. O’Malley set up the advisory panel to avert problems encountered in other states where hydraulic fracturing in the Marcellus Shale has raised environmental concerns, particularly drinking water contamination. Weiss, an environmental lawyer in Ballard Spahr’s Philadelphia office, will serve alongside representatives of the gas industry, environmental organizations, and local governments and businesses in Western Maryland.
The panel’s work is expected to stretch across three years and conclude with a final report to be issued August 1, 2014.
Weiss works closely with Ballard Spahr’s project finance, development and land-use practices as well as its Climate Change and Sustainability Initiative. He is a frequent speaker on shale gas developments and issues.
