Baltimore-Washington business organizations team on task force to foster cyber industry growth


The Greater Baltimore Committee, the Greater Washington Board of Trade and the Economic Alliance of Greater Baltimore announced the creation of a joint task force to solidify Maryland’s Baltimore-Washington corridor as the global center for cyber industry development.

The Baltimore-Washington Cyber Task Force will partner with a number of public and private-sector organizations to develop and to begin implementing a strategy for cyber industry growth around the activities of the new U.S. Cyber Command at the U.S. Army’s Fort George G. Meade.

Robert (Bob) Hannon, who recently served as the president and CEO of Anne Arundel County Economic Development Corporation, has been hired as project manager for the Baltimore-Washington Cyber Task Force. In this role, Hannon will be responsible for developing a strategic plan to leverage the region’s government, educational and business resources to nurture the growth of the region’s cyber industry.

Focuses of the task force’s work will include education and workforce development, building an inventory of government and private-sector cyber resources, examining potential financial mechanisms available to cyber companies, and coordinating cyber-related economic development efforts in the corridor.

“The purpose of this task force is to establish the Greater Washington-Baltimore region as the premier location for cyber capabilities, talent, and innovation that ultimately leads to a positive economic impact and job creation for the region,” said J. Scott Wilfong, president and CEO of SunTrust Maryland and chairman of the Greater Washington Board of Trade.

“The region’s private sector needs to build, in an organized way, on the substantial amount of government cyber security work being done in our midst and to ensure that the full business and community benefit be achieved for the Baltimore-Washington region,” said Brian C. Rogers, chairman and CIO of T. Rowe Price and chairman of the Greater Baltimore Committee.

“It’s vitally important to our economy that we work together to maximize and to promote our region’s potential for cyber industry growth,” said Michael J. Baader, partner-in-charge of Venable LLC and chairman of the Economic Alliance of Greater Baltimore.
