McCormick & Co. Inc. plans to open a 1.8 million-square-foot distribution center at Tradepoint Atlantic in Sparrows Point to meet growing demand in North and South America.
The center, which will be Hunt Valley-based McCormick’s largest distribution site in the world, will break ground in November and open by the second half of 2022. A McCormick spokeswoman said the company estimates the facility will employ 200 people.
The spice maker’s sales have soared during the Covid-19 pandemic. At the outset, people flocked to grocery stores to stock up their pantries. In the months since, McCormick’s sales have continued to surge with the trend of cooking at home becoming more of a habit.
McCormick said it selected Tradepoint Atlantic after considering several sites in Maryland and Pennsylvania. The company will join Amazon, Under Armour, Perdue and several other companies as tenants in the Baltimore County industrial hub.
McCormick opened a new headquarters in Hunt Valley in 2018. The company also has several manufacturing sites in Maryland and has distribution warehouses in Belcamp and Aberdeen. McCormick will consolidate multiple warehouses when opening the new at Tradepoint, but did not specify which locations would be impacted.
Tradepoint Atlantic is located on a 3,100-acre swath of land that used to be the site of the Bethlehem Steel mill. The historic site, where steel had been produced for 125 years, has 100 miles of rail lines, a deep water port and sits just off Interstate 695.
A groundbreaking ceremony will take place on Nov. 12th to commemorate the beginning of construction.
