BGE’s Spring Gardens facility named a bird-friendly habitat by Patterson Park Audubon Center

Baltimore Gas and Electric Company’s (BGE) Spring Gardens campus in South Baltimore has been in continuous operation since 1855 and today remains a major center of the company’s energy operations. On July 26, 2016, Patterson Park Audubon Center recognized the 72-acre industrial facility as an Audubon Bird-Friendly Habitat.

“BGE is committed to improving the environment in our community, and that starts with our own property. We have transformed an industrial site into a thriving wildlife ecosystem in South Baltimore. Patterson Park Audubon Center’s recognition is a result of that commitment and we are grateful to be honored,” said Alex Núñez, BGE’s senior vice president of regulatory and external affairs.

Patterson Park Audubon Center works to protect birds and their habitats and to improve Baltimore for birds and people. Bird-friendly gardens are ones that support residential and migratory birds by providing food, water, shelter, and a suitable place to raise their young. These habitats also work to reduce threats by minimizing window collisions, removing invasive species, eliminating the use of pesticides, and making smart climate choices.

“Audubon promotes bird-friendly gardens at home, work, school, and in community spaces. We work with Baltimore neighbors to create gardens in many shapes and sizes to invite birds, butterflies, and people to enjoy them,” says Patterson Park Audubon Center’s director, Susie Creamer. “We congratulate BGE for planting a garden that feeds birds and beneficial insects while also adding a quiet sanctuary for its employees.”

The 600 employees based at Spring Gardens share the facility with a pollinator garden, a 155 kW solar array and a 100-foot wide riparian forest buffer along the extent of the site’s waterfront. The Audubon Bird-Friendly Habitat recognition joins the site’s Certified Wildlife Habitat certification from the National Wildlife Federation.

BGE’s commitment to the environment is a core value of the company and it has been ISO 14001 (the gold standard certification for environmental management) and an EPA ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year since 2012. In addition, since 2013, the company has given 28,000 free trees to customers through a $500,000 grant to the Arbor Day Foundation. BGE’s Green Grants program also awards grants of up to $10,000 to non-profits dedicated to environmental programs throughout central Maryland each year.
