Comcast investments empower communities

Comcast has been selected as a recipient of the 2012 Mayor’s Business Recognition Awards. The awards are presented annually on behalf of the Baltimore Mayor’s Office, the Baltimore Development Corporation and the Greater Baltimore Committee to companies that have demonstrated corporate leadership, commitment to community and dedication to improving the quality of life in Baltimore City.

The winners of the 2012 Mayor’s Business Recognition Awards were honored at a special luncheon held on Monday, December 10 where Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake joined representatives from the Baltimore Development Corporation and the Greater Baltimore Committee in presenting the awards.

“This program honors Baltimore businesses that have made a profound and positive impact on our communities across the city,” said Mayor Rawlings-Blake. “Comcast works year-round to support local organizations, schools, students and more, and I applaud them for continuously striving to make a difference.”

“Comcast not only aims to keep its customers at the forefront of innovation, but we’re dedicated to giving back to the communities we serve,” said Tom Coughlin, regional senior vice president for Comcast. “We are honored to be recognized among such a notable group of local businesses.”

Comcast empowers communities by investing in local organizations, developing programs and partnerships, and mobilizing its resources to connect people and inspire positive and substantive change. As the nation’s largest Internet service provider, Comcast is also committed to bridging the digital divide by empowering communities through technology.

“This year’s award recipients are exemplary corporate citizens that are not only innovators and prominent players in their fields, but have made community service and civic commitment part of the fabric of their companies or organizations,” said Donald C. Fry, president & CEO of the Greater Baltimore Committee. “We are pleased to honor Comcast among this esteemed group for its efforts to make Baltimore a better place to live and work.”

Comcast supports Baltimore City communities year round in a number of ways, including through volunteer initiatives, youth leadership development opportunities and digital literacy programs. For example:

• In April 2012, more than 200 Comcast employees, their families and friends and members of local community and nonprofit groups pitched in to plant, reinforce and mulch trees, and clean up around the grounds of Gwynn Falls Elementary School in Baltimore City and in the neighboring Hanlon Park in partnership with the Parks & People Foundation as part of “Comcast Cares Day,” one of the largest single days of corporate volunteering in the country.

Comcast Cares Day volunteers also contributed this year to several other projects in the Greater Baltimore area, including working with children to teach them about environmental friendliness, plant seeds and decorate reusable shopping bags in partnership with Volunteers of America Chesapeake’s Pratt House, and mentoring and bowling with young members of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Chesapeake in Timonium.

• In March 2012, Comcast awarded more than $100,000 to 100 Maryland high school seniors, including 18 students attending Baltimore City Schools, through its annual Leaders and Achievers Scholarship program. The program recognizes students’ leadership skills, academic achievement and commitment to community service.

• The Comcast Digital Connectors program provides young people in Baltimore with an opportunity to learn about broadband technologies and how to put that knowledge to work in a wide range of career development and community service activities.

• Comcast offers its Internet Essentials program in Baltimore, a groundbreaking program that gives lower-income families access to low-cost internet service, affordable computers and free digital literacy training.

Since 2011, Comcast has invested more than $770,000 in local Baltimore organizations, such as Associated Black Charities, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Chesapeake, Boys & Girls Club of Metropolitan Baltimore, Coppin State University, Education Based Latino Outreach, Family League of Baltimore City, Living Classroom, United Way of Central Maryland, Urban League of Greater Baltimore, and numerous sorority and fraternity foundations.
