Following the August 25 announcement that UMBC President Freeman Hrabowski would be retiring after leading the university for three decades, The Daily Record posted reactions from Maryland leaders and personalities. A few of these are included below.

“There’s no doubt that Freeman’s influence—locally, nationally—is well-earned and deeply felt. I don’t think I’ve ever met a person who so powerfully inspires excellence. And that’s exactly what his legacy is—a commitment to inclusive excellence that lives on in UMBC, its students, faculty, staff, and alumni. I think of Dr. Hrabowski as the spark that’s lit a flame, and that flame is something extraordinary. That flame is an institution completely committed to student engagement, opportunity, and success.”– Jay Perman, Chancellor, University System of Maryland

“From his wisdom to his infectious laugh, I’ll truly miss working closely with Dr. Hrabowski. The growth and accomplishments that @UMBC has enjoyed are a credit to his leadership and vision. Dr. Hrabowski is a treasure & legend in our state & in the universe of higher education.” —Towson University President Kim Schatzel (via Twitter)

“Freeman Hrabowski has been nothing short of remarkable in his tenure as President of UMBC and as an academic leader in the State of Maryland and the nation. He transformed UMBC from a respected local institution to a university of considerable national stature, known for its innovation, science and technology programs, and its culture of excellence. He has made a lasting impact by advancing minority participation in math and other sciences, which has paid off with a significant number of students of color earning doctorate and medical degrees.” — Donald C. Fry, President and CEO, Greater Baltimore Committee
