The Greater Baltimore Committee and the Baltimore Sun are hosting a reception and presentation of the Sun‘s Marylander of the Year award to Orioles manager Buck Showalter on March 4.
The limited-seating event will be from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Baltimore Sun, 501 N. Calvert Street, Baltimore. Cost to attend the limited-seating event is $65 for GBC members and $85 for non-members. (Register online)
The Marylander of the Year Award was established in 1987 and for 15 years honored the person who “contributed the most to Baltimore and Maryland and to the lives of our people.” After a 10-year hiatus, the Baltimore Sun decided to revive the award. Past recipients have included Cal Ripken Jr., James W. Rouse and John Waters.
“Buck Showalter, the taciturn, passionate, obsessive, big-hearted, dogged and wise manager of the Baltimore Orioles is The Sun’s 2012 Marylander of the Year,” the Sun‘s editorial board announced Dec. 30 . “Mr. Showalter’s business is, of course, a boy’s game played by millionaires. But it is also one of the rare things that can bind every part of this community together, a tradition that knits one generation to the next.
