Former U.S. Secretary of Transportation Rodney E. Slater kicked off the GBC’s 2019 Transportation Summit on Sept. 9, 2019, with a keynote address, touching on such topics as Amtrak’s Acela Express service, the proposed Northeast Maglev, autonomous vehicles and the Red Line mass transit light rail line.
“What will be the transportation technology that will give us the oomph to move forward?,” Slater asked, adding that, “This region is at the center of transportation thought.”
At the event, Kevin B. Quinn, Administrator for the Maryland Transit Administration, presented the organization’s 10 Year Capital Needs Inventory and Prioritization and the Central Maryland Regional Transit Plan.
During his presentation, Quinn discussed such issues as service frequency, reliability, bus stop amenities, personal safety, cleanliness, customer service and off-peak services. “It’s really going to be a brand new face for the MTA over the next couple years,” Quinn said.

Michael B. Kelly, Executive Director of the Baltimore Metropolitan Council, discussed the Maximize 2045 Regional Transportation Plan and identified such goals as improving system safety, existing infrastructure, accessibility, mobility and environmental concerns, and fostering participation and informed decision-making throughout the process.
