IWIF and employees donate $81,000 to Maryland Charity Campaign

IWIF Workers’ Compensation Insurance and its employees recently donated more than $81,000 to the Maryland Charity Campaign, the state-sponsored fundraising initiative for local and national charities. Through the IWIF & You Charitable Outreach Program, IWIF matched employees’ donations dollar-for-dollar. The generous support of employees enabled IWIF to exceed its campaign goal by 14 percent, despite the sluggish economy.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank IWIF employees who donated to the Maryland Charity Campaign,” Thomas Phelan, IWIF President and CEO, said. “Their generous contributions will benefit thousands of people who need a helping hand. I also recognize the many other ways they gave back to the community throughout the year. Their selfless actions give IWIF heart, and make me proud to lead this organization.”

Other acts of giving in 2012
IWIF’s Charitable Contributions Committee, comprised of employees who volunteer their time to plan fundraisers, collections and award grant money, reported that co-workers turned out in record numbers in 2012 to give back to the community.

While IWIF supports many charities, four organizations in particular receive year-long support from employees. They include:
Kids’ Chance of Maryland
, a nonprofit organization that provides scholarships to children of Maryland’s catastrophically or fatally injured workers
Franciscan Center, a Baltimore-based emergency outreach center
Big Brothers Big Sisters, an organization that matches qualified volunteers with children to create mentoring relationships
Maryland Charity Campaign, the Maryland-sponsored fundraising initiative for local and national charities

Members of IWIF’s Charitable Contributions Committee also award grant money and matching funds to nonprofit organizations throughout the state with a 501(c)3 status that support children’s health and education, safety in the workplace and home, and relief for medical, environmental or natural disasters.

Effective October 1, IWIF will become Chesapeake Employers’ Insurance Company. IWIF is the primary provider of workers’ compensation insurance in Maryland and is a fully self-supporting insurance company that operates solely from premium and investment income. Located in Towson, the company employs nearly 400 workers.
