Joe Sullivan, chairman and CEO of Legg Mason, Inc. and a member of the Greater Baltimore Committee’s Board of Directors, has been named Business Leader of the Year for 2015 by Loyola University Maryland’s Sellinger School of Business and Management. The award honors business executives who embody Loyola’s Jesuit commitment to community and service in the leadership of their company.
Sullivan will be honored at Loyola’s annual Business Leader of the Year dinner on Thursday, Nov. 19 at the Renaissance Baltimore Harborplace Hotel.
Sullivan rejoined Legg Mason, a global asset management firm listed on the New York Stock Exchange, in September 2008, serving as head of global distribution and chief administrative officer before being appointed interim CEO in October 2012. Prior to Legg Mason, he served on the board of directors of Stifel Financial, and as executive vice president and head of fixed income capital markets for Stifel Nicolaus. Sullivan has more than 30 years of industry experience, holding prior executive roles at Legg Mason Wood Walker, Dain Bosworth and Piper Jaffray.
“Joe Sullivan continues to grow Legg Mason’s reputation as one of the world’s most revered brands in asset management,” said Jesuit Father Brian F. Linnane, president of Loyola. “A critical component of the company’s success is the tireless dedication to Legg Mason clients, employees and the Baltimore community that he has helped to inspire. Legg Mason’s strong commitment to integrity serves as a model for our students in the Sellinger School, and exemplifies the commitment to service we profoundly admire as a Jesuit institution.”
Sullivan also serves as trustee and former chair of the Securities Industry Institute. He was formerly chair of the fixed income committee of the National Association of Securities Dealers, a board member of the Bond Market Association, and a member of the New York Stock Exchange hearing board.
Sullivan has served as a member of the boards of trustees for Catholic Charities and St. Ignatius Loyola Academy. He was formerly chairman of the board of Loyola Blakefield, as well as president of the Baltimore Youth Hockey Association.
Sullivan earned his degree in economics from St. John’s University, and is a graduate of the Securities Industry Institute at the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.
