The National Committee for Quality Assurance’s (NCQA) Health Plan Ratings 2021 report has named Kaiser Permanente in the Mid-Atlantic region among the highest rated commercial and Medicare health plans in the nation. Compared with more than 1,000 health systems included in the ratings, Kaiser Permanente’s Mid-Atlantic region is the only one to achieve a rating of 5 out of 5 stars from NCQA for both the Medicare and Commercial lines of business, a recognition that sets the health system apart based on patient care, treatment, prevention and patient experience. Kaiser Permanente also received 5 stars for its Medicaid plan from NCQA.
NCQA rates more than 1,000 health plans nationally each year based on numerous measures that assess patient care outcomes and experience. NCQA’s annual report rates plans based on a 0-to-5 star scale, with 5 stars being the best. In the Mid-Atlantic region, Kaiser Permanente’s commercial and Medicare plans scored 5 stars in Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia. This is the eighth NCQA report in which Kaiser Permanente’s regional health plan in the Mid-Atlantic received 5 stars. Consumers can compare health plans on the NCQA website at reportcards.ncqa.org
Only 17 out of more than 1,000 health plans nationwide (less than 2 percent) received a 5-star rating in the most recent report and six of those plans were Kaiser Permanente. This is the sixth year in a row that Kaiser Permanente has more 5-star plans than any health plan in the nation. This also marks the third consecutive year that Kaiser Permanente’s commercial and Medicare plans are the highest rated (or tied for highest) in every geographic region it serves.
