For his enduring service, contributions to the community and assistance in enabling Capitol College to achieve significant advances in education, Haden A. Land, vice president and chief technology officer for Lockheed Martin Information Systems and Global Services – Civil Product Line and the college’s 2010 commencement speaker, was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters, honoris causa, May 15.
“Capitol College is proud to confer upon Haden Land our honorary doctorate degree. As a certified systems architect with 26 years of professional experience across both public and private sectors, Haden is the kind of worthy and accomplished professional our new alumni should seek out for good advice regarding their future careers in the technology industry,” said Dr. Michael Wood, president. “His unwavering dedication to helping us advance STEM and information assurance curriculum education makes him more than deserving. We look forward to working with him and Lockheed Martin in many future endeavors in advancing engineering and business education.”
Land holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and computer science from the State University of New York at Potsdam and a master’s degree in computer and information science from Syracuse University. He is a member of several governing and advising bodies, including the Computer Science Advisory Board for Potsdam University, the Leadership Advisory Board of Capitol College, the Lockheed Martin Hispanic Executive Council, and the Foundation Board of Prince George’s Community College.
In addressing Capitol’s new alumni at the May commencement ceremony, Land said “I hope each of you understands the importance of your accomplishment today. I encourage you to stay focused on customer perception as you execute your professional career, be very aware of the pace of change and how to proactively adapt to it and last, but not least, to focus on both your management innovation and strategic leadership skills. I personally ask each of you to influence history instead of merely observing it occur.”
