MacKenzie Contracting Company, LLC has been awarded an Excellence in Construction Award by the Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. (ABC) for their project at Anne Arundel Community College (AACC). Receiving ABC’s highest award, Excellence, the project was a complete renovation of the 25,000 square foot Humanities Building, situated on campus at 101 College Parkway, Arnold. The annual Excellence in Construction Awards honors the Nation’s most innovative and high quality construction projects and outstanding contractors, recognizing their achievements in leadership, safety, innovation, and diversity. MacKenzie’s Senior Vice President of Operations Scott Albright and Superintendent Bill Edwards oversaw the project, completing all required work on time and while classes were in session.
“It has been a pleasure working with the AACC Facilities Planning and Construction team. We appreciate being awarded the opportunity to demonstrate our expertise in higher education and meeting the challenges that can arise in this forum,” stated Joe Versey, MacKenzie Contracting’s Vice President of Business Development. “To be recognized by ABC is an honor; I am extremely proud of our guys and of the completed project.”
The renovation included complete upgrade of the HVAC system, asbestos removal, replacing all exterior doors and windows, reworking all sprinkler lines, replacement of ceilings with new acoustical ceiling grid and tile, new lighting and flooring, painting, corridor space upgrades, and additional exterior paint and repairs. The work was completed in seven phases to allow for the flow of students and faculty to continue uninterrupted.
“We recognize the difficulty of managing a phased construction project in an occupied building; the MacKenzie team handled this very well,” stated Joyce Dawson, Anne Arundel Community College’s Assistant Director, Facilities Planning and Construction. “We appreciate the excellent customer service that was provided and which also kept in mind the comfort and safety of our faculty, staff, and students.”
Architect firm Gant Brunnett designed the newly renovated Humanities Building for the college. “The MacKenzie team’s ‘can-do’ attitude, backed by their experience with managing tight schedules on similar projects, made for a successful project and more importantly, a satisfied client,” said John Brunnett, President of Gant Brunnett Architects who designed the building renovations for the college. “It was equally impressive to see how the MacKenzie team seamlessly handled changes in the scope of work that arose, and dealt with the expanded volume of work while holding to the original schedule.”
