MacKenzie Contracting wins Excellence Award for Tarks Grill Renovation

And the winner is…

MacKenzie Contracting Company, LLC is the proud recipient of the Baltimore Metropolitan Chapter Associated Builders’ and Contractors’, “ABC” Excellence in Construction Award for their renovation of Tark’s Grill, an upscale restaurant at Green Spring Station, in Lutherville.

ABC, a national nonprofit construction trade association responsible for promoting the interests of merit shop contractors, coordinates the prestigious awards competition to raise the level of construction standards throughout the industry by recognizing outstanding workmanship and superior project management. After a demanding application process, a panel of judges chose the Tark’s Grill renovation project for the category Renovation $500,000 to $1 million. Their strict criteria incorporated quality, adherence to deadlines and budgets, superior architectural design, and the ability of the owner, architect, and general contracting team to overcome adversity during the construction process.

Dave Riegel, a vice president with MacKenzie Contracting, served as the project manager for the renovation, which included contemporary finishes throughout, a new bar, a temperature-controlled wine display room, kitchen upgrades and a new exterior patio and fireplace. Rick Burns of Burns Associates was the architect for the project.

“This was not an easy job,” said Bill Shriver, an operating partner with Tark’s Grill. “From irregularities and surprises to the fulfillment of meeting time deadlines, MacKenzie Contracting was 110 percent on the money. They communicated with me daily, visited the site more than needed, worked hard to keep us within our budget, offered time and monetary saving suggestions, and were absolutely professional from beginning to end. “

“We are very excited about the award,” said Marty Copsey, president of MacKenzie Contracting Company, LLC. “Our staff and a dedicated team of subcontractors did an excellent job. We were delighted to have the opportunity at Tark’s, and honored to be recognized. But most importantly, the Client is pleased with the project.”

Ninty projects were submitted for the 2008 Excellence Awards, a record number according to ABC officials. Awards will be presented at ABC’s annual program, April 30 at the Hyatt Regency in Baltimore from 5-9 p.m. Recipients are listed on the Chapter’s Web site and in the April edition of the organization’s monthly magazine. The highly-anticipated event plays a key role in ABC’s mission to offer superior programs and services to their members that provide a competitive advantage, add value for the industry’s clients, and enhance the lives of the industry’s employees.
