Maryland Works launches Center for Excellence in Employment of People with Disabilities

Maryland Works, Inc. has launched a new initiative called the Center for Excellence in Employment of People with Disabilities and other barriers.

The center’s work will address core areas such as: provisions of information, outreach, and support for individuals with disabilities and their families; strengthening the effectiveness of direct support professionals who help individuals find and maintain jobs; promoting organizational change strategies that allow community rehabilitation providers to target resources towards employment; and providing analysis of state and national policies and their impact across communities and state agencies that provide employment supports.

The goal of this multi-faceted approach is to increase integrated employment for all individuals with intellectual, developmental and other disabilities, and to influence policy and strategy that establishes employment as the priority outcome for state service systems.

The center will provide information on employment options and resources for people with disabilities and their families, community service providers, self-advocates advocacy organizations, transition professionals and our community partners. The center will also identify the needs of community service professionals in the context of systems change and will provide training and direct technical assistance aimed at expanding employment and business ownership opportunities for individuals with disabilities and other barriers to employment.

The center will be guided by a network of advisors, including self-advocates with disabilities, family members and state and national partners that will advance the center’s effectiveness in meeting its important mission.
