WESTMINSTER, Md. – McDaniel College selects W. Thomas Phizacklea as the college’s new vice president for administration and finance effective June 23. He succeeds Dr. Ethan Seidel who has held this position since 1993 and is returning to teach and serve as chair of the economics and business administration department at McDaniel.
A proven financial leader in higher education, Phizacklea has held senior-level leadership positions at Centenary College of Louisiana, and most recently, Goucher College, where he served as vice president for finance for the last 15 years.
“Tom is a first-generation graduate who is highly regarded in our State for his fiscal acumen and is a strong advocate for access and affordability for private, liberal-arts education,” said McDaniel president Roger N. Casey. “Plus, his forward-thinking about student-centered financial models that address changing expectations in today’s marketplace make him a great fit for McDaniel.”
As a member of the leadership team at McDaniel, Phizacklea will be responsible for budget planning and oversight, campus construction and renovation, management of the college’s endowment and operations, including campus planning, improvements and maintenance, human resources, for-profit rentals and contractual agreements, as well as WMC Development Corporation, the college’s for-profit enterprise. He will also serve as liaison to the Board of Trustees on the Budget, Endowment, Buildings and Grounds, Audit, and Executive committees.
He is a former member of the governing board of the Baltimore Collegetown Network and currently serves on the board at Trinity Washington University.
“It is an honor to be joining the McDaniel College community,” Phizacklea said. “The enthusiasm and positive spirit of McDaniel came through in every conversation I had with students, faculty, staff, alumni and Board members.”
A native of Johnstown, Pa., he holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh, where he attended night school and completed a major in business and economics. He earned his MBA from Mt. St. Mary’s University and has studied at the Institute for Educational Management at Harvard University.
