Mindgrub’s Vice President of Creative Strategy, Leah Vogely, is serving as a mentor in the Technovation Entrepreneurship Program to a team of three female entrepreneurs from Atholton High School in Columbia.
Technovation offers girls from around the world the opportunity to learn the skills they need to emerge as tech entrepreneurs and leaders through the lens of mobile app development. Every year, Technovation invites girls to identify a problem in their community, and then challenges them to solve it. Girls work in teams to build both a mobile app and a business plan to launch that app, supported by mentors and guided by their curriculum.
Technovation’s curriculum takes students through 4 stages of launching a mobile app startup, inspired by the principles of design thinking:
- Ideation: Identifying a problem in the community
- Technology: Developing a mobile app solution
- Entrepreneurship: Building a business plan to launch the app
- Pitch: Bringing the business to market
The team from Atholton High School – Elizabeth Chen, Alyk Moomaw and Katerina Graf – met with Vogely at Mindgrub’s offices in April to garner insight on their business plan. After finalizing their plan, the students scripted a pitch video, developed the app prototype and pitched their innovative healthcare idea to the regional Technovation ambassadors on April 26.
Should they be selected to move on to the next round of pitches, Elizabeth, Alyk and Katerina will move on to the 2017 World Pitch Summit in Silicon Valley, California in early August.
“Technovation has proven to be an extremely rewarding program for young women, the technology industry, and the mentors that take time to step away from their day-to-day to help these incredibly intelligent teams,” said Vogely, Mindgrub Vice President of Creative Strategy. “Providing a platform for young women to innovate freely and think creatively is so valuable, and it’s that creative thinking and teamwork that will carry these teams forward into their careers. I look forward to seeing the growth in diversity within the tech industry through programs like Technovation.”
