January 6, 2016 – Bethesda, Md. – Whiteford Taylor & Preston announced today that prominent bankruptcy attorney Nelson C. Cohen has joined the firm as Senior Counsel in its Bethesda office. With decades of experience in bankruptcy law, Mr. Cohen is experienced representing both debtors and creditors in bankruptcy courts and has negotiated hundreds of workouts.
“We are very pleased to welcome Nelson to our firm,” said Paul M. Nussbaum, Chair of the Business Reorganizations and Bankruptcy Litigation Group. “The breadth of his bankruptcy law experience, his stature in the profession and his reputation in the DC area significantly enhance our capabilities for serving clients nationally, regionally and locally.”
Mr. Cohen concentrates his practice on homebuilding and related fields, including mortgage lending, office and apartment buildings and home furnishings, as well as on companies in the hospitality and luxury goods industries. He has represented numerous debtors in complex Chapter 11 reorganizations, served as creditor committee counsel and represented secured creditors in bankruptcy cases. He has also represented Chapter 11 and Chapter 7 Trustees in virtually all aspects of bankruptcy law.
Brent Strickland, Managing Partner of the Bethesda office, said “Nelson is not only the newest member of our national bankruptcy practice but also contributes significantly to our growing presence in Montgomery County and the surrounding areas. We are delighted that he is joining us.”
In addition to his client work, Mr. Cohen has served as chair of the Bankruptcy Task Force of the District of Columbia Circuit Judicial Conference Committee on Pro Bono Legal Services, as well as on the Local Rules Committee in the District of Columbia to help overhaul the Local Bankruptcy Rules.
“I’m excited to join the Whiteford team in Bethesda,” Cohen said. “In itself, the breadth and quality of the bankruptcy practice is a powerful attraction, bringing opportunities to be involved with significant cases. Even more, I am returning to my roots in Montgomery County, where I grew up as a lawyer.”
