Reminder: Artscape application deadlines are fast approaching

Have you always wanted to be a part of the Artscape festivities? Then don’t miss the opportunity to participate in this year’s event. America’s largest, free arts festival is seeking visual and performing artists, cultural, fashion and children exhibitors, dance and theater companies and more.

The deadlines to apply for consideration are fast approaching. Deadlines vary depending on application and discipline and must be completed online. The 28th annual Artscape takes place July 17 and 8 from 12-10 p.m. and July 19 from 12-8 p.m. centered on the 1200 block of Mount Royal Avenue and the 1400-1700 blocks of North Charles Street. The festival is presented by Mayor Sheila Dixon and produced by the Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts.

Artscape Applications

Artists’ Market
Artscape offers 120-plus juried booths featuring America’s finest crafts and fine arts, both to admire and purchase including ceramics, drawing, mixed media, jewelry, photography, sculpture and computer art. Application deadline is March 31.

Billie Holiday Vocal Competition
The annual competition memorializes the unique singing style of Baltimore’s own Billie Holiday as singers compete for top honors and cash prizes. Contestants and companies in Maryland, Delaware, Washington, D.C. and Fairfax, Loudon and Prince William counties in Northern Virginia and Adams, Chester, Franklin and Lancaster counties in Southern Pennsylvania are eligible to apply to participate. The winner receives a cash prize and the chance to perform live with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra at Artscape. The competition will be held at Artscape on July 19 at the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. Application deadline is extended to April 30.

Cab Calloway Vocal Competition
The annual event pays homage to jazz vocal icon Cab Calloway by giving a unique performance opportunity to talented individuals. The competition is open to contestants in Maryland, Delaware, Washington, D.C., and Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William counties in Northern Virginia and Adams, Chester, Franklin and Lancaster counties in Southern Pennsylvania. The winner receives a cash prize and the opportunity to perform live with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra at Artscape. The competition will be held at Artscape on July 19 at the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. Application deadline is extended to April 30.

Chick Webb Jazz Combo Competition
The annual competition, in its second year, honors Webb’s jazz legacy by providing jazz trios, quartets and quintets an opportunity to compete for top awards. The competition is open to jazz combos with three, four or five musicians from Maryland, Delaware, Washington, D.C., Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William counties in Northern Virginia or Adams, Chester, Franklin and Lancaster counties in Southern Pennsylvania. This contest is hosted by Everyman Theatre. Application deadline is extended to April 30.

Children’s Entertainment/Street Theater
Artscape is now accepting entertainment submissions for children’s entertainment and street theater performers. Application deadline is March 31.

Cultural Exhibitors
Museums, advocacy groups, educational institutions, non-profit arts organizations, and other institutions contributing a cultural resource to the citizens of Maryland are encouraged to be a part of Artscape for promotional or outreach purposes. Application deadline is March 31.

Dance at Artscape
Adult professional dance companies, youth dance ensembles, and private dance studios/schools are encouraged to submit materials to perform at Artscape. Contestants and companies in Maryland, Delaware, Washington, D.C. and Fairfax, Loudon and Prince William Counties in Northern Virginia and Adams, Chester, Franklin and Lancaster Counties in Southern Pennsylvania are eligible to apply to participate. This event is hosted by The Lyric. Application deadline is March 31.

DemoScape
Artscape is seeking artists for scheduled demonstrations throughout the weekend. During this series, participating artists will have an opportunity to demonstrate creative art and introduce festival-goers of all ages to a variety of art mediums, creation techniques, and genres. New this year, interested artists must be participants of the Artists’ Market; therefore, those wishing to exhibit for DemoScape must be an “accepted” Artists’ Market exhibitor. Application deadline is March 31.

DIY at Artscape
DIY at Artscape supports emerging crafters. Back for its second year, Artscape seeks talented artists with original and quality work. Participating artists must have handmade pieces with at least 80 percent of the items priced at $100 or less. Application deadline is March 31.

Fashion at Artscape – Fashion Shows
Throughout the weekend, Fashion at Artscape will feature scheduled fashion shows and impromptu workshops on the fashion runway. This is a fantastic opportunity to display creative work and get the crowd excited about fashion. Application deadline is May 31.

Fashion at Artscape – Exhibitors
Fashion at Artscape showcases local and regional designers, fashion exhibitors, fashion workshops, fashion shows and more! Application deadline is March 31.

Food Vendors
Food vendors offer a delicious menu of food and beverages to sell at the festival. Returning this year is the “Green” Food Court, which supports the effort to curb harmful effects on the environment and gives Artscape attendees a healthful alternative to traditional festival fare. Application deadline is March 31.

In the Neighborhood
As a neighbor of Bolton Hill, Midtown Belvedere, Mount Royal and Station North, we would like to include your organization in our program listing of special events occurring during Artscape. Application deadline is May 22.

Music Entertainment
Interested musicians and bands can submit work through Sonicbids for general performance consideration. Sonicbids helps artists and music promoters connect online. Sonicbids has become one of the fastest-growing music communities on the Internet. Musicians are able to create a Sonicbids account with a username and password, create an electronic press kit (EPK) and then submit the EPK to the shows they are interested in i.e. Artscape. Application deadline is March 31.

Sound-Off! Artscape’s Local/Unsigned Band Contest
Artscape is seeking talented local or unsigned bands for the second annual contest. After the initial selection process, five artists who applied through Sonicbids will be selected to have their music posted on an online voting platform. From May 1- 31, Artscape music lovers and fans will be able to vote for their favorite band. The group that receives the most votes will perform at Artscape 2009. The contest winner will receive compensation and a backstage party. Application deadline is March 31.

Sew Me What You Got Competition, presented by IKEA Baltimore
This new competition is seeking talented fashion designers to create one garment using fabric purchased at IKEA Baltimore, located at 8352 Honeygo Boulevard. Semifinalists will be chosen to display their designs in-store at IKEA Baltimore and on the Fashion at Artscape Stage. Prizes include cash and a photo spread in Iconography the Magazine. Application deadline is May 4.

Target Family Art Park (Children’s Park)
Artscape is seeking children’s exhibitors and organizations to offer children’s level educational resources/projects for the Target Family Art Park. Application deadline is March 31.

The Play’s the Thing
Artscape’s theater showcase invites theater companies in the mid-Atlantic region to perform at The Theater Project during the festival. Contestants and companies in Maryland, Delaware, Washington, D.C. and Fairfax, Loudon and Prince William counties in Northern Virginia and Adams, Chester, Franklin and Lancaster counties in Southern Pennsylvania are eligible to apply to participate. Applicants are encouraged to incorporate an Edgar Allan Poe theme with submissions. Application deadline is March 31.

Volunteers are needed at various times during the festival and for a variety of activities including the children’s crafts projects area, artist and exhibitor booth relief, information stations, exhibitor hospitality, Fashion at Artscape and more.
