RTKL, the global architecture, planning and design firm, is pleased to welcome John Ruggieri as the new vice president and head of the Planning and Urban Design group in the firm’s Dallas office. As an industry leader in design and real estate development, Ruggieri brings more than 30 years of experience in planning and development to the team. Having focused on revitalization programs, mixed-use, residential, hospitality, recreational facilities and public/civic projects, he will counsel clients on establishing exciting and economically viable places. Ruggieri is anticipated to build on RTKL’s success in developing key urban design projects in the south central United States and Latin America.
“Thoughtful urban design is one of the most important ways we improve communities around the world,” said Lance Josal FAIA, RTKL CEO and president. “Bringing John Ruggieri on board underscores our six-decade commitment to planning and urban design and we’re looking forward to seeing where he takes us, particularly as the markets in Dallas, the broader region and South and Central America continue to show so much possibility.”
Ruggieri said his greatest asset lies in his range of experience. He comes to RTKL after four years in business development for the City of Avondale, Ariz., overseeing the acquisition, land, construction and leasing for a $32 million sports and retail development. He also developed a $125 million spring training ballpark and practice facility for the Cincinnati Reds and the Cleveland Indians. Previously, Ruggieri worked as a principal partner and director of community development for Project Design Consultants, and before that, started his career by forming and expanding a multi-disciplinary AE firm with offices in Minneapolis, San Francisco and Newport Beach.
“I have always had an entrepreneurial spirit and I have now come full circle in my career, starting at a design firm, working in development for years and now back to planning and architecture,” Ruggieri said. “I always look for a balance between vision and feasibility, between design and what works best for a particular community and the environment. This is exactly what RTKL is trying to achieve with its Performance-Driven DesignSM initatives and I couldn’t be more pleased to join them in their mission,” he continued.
Despite his decades of professional success, Ruggieri said his greatest accomplishment has been the establishment of a Minneapolis-based adoption platform in Romania, which has led to several thousand adoptions over the past 20 years. He also founded a nonprofit corporation that provides medical assistance and education to Romanian hospitals and orphanages.
