Statement of Donald C. Fry, President and CEO, Greater Baltimore Committee, on U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg’s Visit to the Port of Baltimore

“The Greater Baltimore Committee is pleased that Secretary Buttigieg had the opportunity to visit Baltimore’s Seagirt and Dundalk Marine terminals. As the nation’s largest port facility for specialized cargo, the Port of Baltimore’s economic impact on the region is significant. It creates thousands of jobs, generates billions in business income and has handled more than 40 million tons of international cargo annually. For these reasons and many others, the port should be widely recognized and appreciated.

We must ensure that port-related activities continue to play an integral role on the region’s economic success. Investment in U.S. port infrastructure is vital in order to address dock congestion and terminal conditions. Upgrades to Baltimore’s ports and waterways will help to keep Maryland competitive in the global shipping sector.”
