Towson University (TU) honored Gary T. Gill, president and CEO of MacKenzie Commercial Real Estate Services, LLC with the esteemed Distinguished Alumni Award at their 2009 Distinguished Alumni & Deans Recognition Awards Banquet on April 30. The TU Distinguished Alumni award, conferred since 1958, is presented annually to one member of the TU alumni community who exemplifies continued professional development, success in his or her field, and a commitment to Towson University.
Since being named president in 1985, Gill has overseen all facets of the day-to-day operations of the MacKenzie Companies, a full-service commercial real estate group of companies comprising MacKenzie Commercial Real Estate Services, LLC; MacKenzie Management Company, LLC, MacKenzie Services Company, LLC; and MacKenzie Contracting Company, LLC. Together the companies provide a multi-disciplined and comprehensive approach to any Commercial Real Estate need including sales, leasing and disposition, commercial and residential development, finance and investment, asset and property management, and general contracting. Gill also serves as executive vice president of MacKenzie Properties, Inc., corporate managing partner of more than 40 partnerships of income-producing commercial properties.
Gill started at MacKenzie in 1977 as assistant to the president. He was named vice president in charge of development in 1978 and became president and chief operating officer in 1985 and chief executive officer in 1992. He was instrumental in expanding the company from eight employees in 1977 to more than 125 employees. MacKenzie’s headquarters are in Lutherville, MD, with branch offices in downtown Baltimore, Annapolis, Maple Lawn, and Bel Air.
Gill is an active partner in the development, leasing and management of more than 50 commercial projects comprising 3.5 million square feet, with an aggregate value of more than $400 million. He is also a partner in the development of numerous residential projects through MacKenzie Investment Group, LLC.
An involved member of the Towson community, Gill has served on the Towson University Board of Visitors since 2005, and was chair from 2005 to 2007. He also serves on the Camden Yards Sports and Entertainment Committee and is on the Board of Governors for the US Lacrosse Foundation. He is an avid supporter of Towson athletics and is a member of the Towson University Blazer Club.
Gill has also served as president of the Towson University Tiger Club, board member of the Bay National Bank, president of the Board of Governors of the Baltimore Country Club, member of the Board of Trustees at the Calvert Hall College High School, board member of the Lax 4 Baltimore Committee for NCAA National Men’s Lacrosse Championships, member of the Baltimore County Economic Advisory Board, member of the University of Virginia McIntire School of Commerce Real Estate Advisory Board, and chairman of the St. Paul’s School annual fund.
Gill has four children: Meghan, Conor, Brendan and Gavin.
At the ceremony, Gill was introduced by Towson University President Robert L. Caret, and presented the award by Alumni Association President, Kim Fabian, ’88.
