University of Maryland, Baltimore President Dr. Jay Perman honored with Great Friend to Kids Award

Port Discovery Children’s Museum honored Dr. Jay Perman, President of the University of Maryland, Baltimore April 6 with the 2017 Great Friend to Kids Award at Port Discovery’s annual Play It Forward fundraiser. Dr. Perman is being recognized for his commitment and dedication to improving the lives of youth and families in the Baltimore area.

Dr. Jay Perman has dedicated his career to improving the lives of children and the Baltimore community. As the President of the University of Maryland, Baltimore, and an active pediatric  gastroenterologist, educator and citizen, Dr. Perman’s work to improve the health and wellness, education and overall well-being of children and families in the Baltimore community has gone far beyond curing runny noses. His commitment to community engagement and outreach, improving quality of life and access to important services for our underserved communities, and educating future generations of professionals in fields like healthcare, law and social work embodies the work that Port Discovery sets out to accomplish and honor through the Great Friend to Kids Award.

The Great Friend to Kids award honors individuals and corporations who have made significant and outstanding contributions toward strengthening education and improving the lives of children in Maryland. Past recipients include Baltimore Ravens Coach John Harbaugh, former Baltimore Ravens Wide Receiver Torrey Smith, Dana and Scott Plank, Douglas Becker of Laureate Education, Inc., University of Baltimore president and 46th Mayor of Baltimore City Kurt Schmoke and former State Superintendent Dr. Nancy Grasmick.

Funds raised Play It Forward allows the museum to provide free and reduced admission for children from economically-challenged communities, children with special needs and military personnel, offer Museum on the Road community outreach programs and help at-risk families improve literacy and parenting skills.
