THE GREATER BALTIMORE COMMITTEE NAMES DR. MOHAN SUNTHA AS NEW CHAIR, FIRST CHAIR ELECTED TO LEAD ORGANIZATION FOLLOWING MERGER WITH ECONOMIC ALLIANCE OF GREATER BALTIMORE

GBC Membership confirms Dr. Suntha and Board slate of officers during March 22nd membership business meeting

(Baltimore, Md.) – The Greater Baltimore Committee (GBC) has named Mohan Suntha, MD, MBA, President and Chief Executive Officer of the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS), as the new Chair of its Board of Directors. Following a unanimous recommendation of the Board nominating committee and membership vote, Dr. Suntha is the first Board Chair elected following the GBC’s merger with the Economic Alliance of Greater Baltimore in 2022.

Dr. Suntha will lead the GBC Board until May 2025. He succeeds Calvin G. Butler Jr., President and CEO of Exelon, who has served as GBC Chair since 2020 and will remain on the Board and serve as Immediate Past Chair.

“I couldn’t be more excited about the direction and future of the new GBC under the leadership of CEO Mark Anthony Thomas and Dr. Suntha,” said Butler. “Mohan brings a collaborative approach to problem solving that involves the community as a whole. I look forward to watching him steer the GBC to the next level of success for Baltimore, our region and our state.”

Dr. Suntha becomes the 35th Chair to lead the GBC in its 68-year history.

“I am incredibly honored to accept this position as Chair of The Greater Baltimore Committee. I thank my predecessor and close friend Calvin Butler for his years of service and leadership,” said Dr. Suntha. “This is a pivotal time for both Baltimore City and the State of Maryland. We all have a choice to make – either be leaders pushing for positive and inclusive change or accept the status quo. The GBC and its membership are committed to being these kinds of leaders, and I am incredibly optimistic about what we all can accomplish over the next year.”

Dr. Suntha added, “Making progress and helping the city we all love isn’t the job of the government alone, we all have to take responsibility. None of us have the luxury of being passive citizens of this city. This starts by leveraging all the tremendous assets we already have – great institutions, world-class businesses, infrastructure, a rich history and, of course, the people. I look forward to getting to work.”

Dr. Suntha and the new slate of officers were confirmed during the Board’s February 21st meeting for the vote of GBC Membership today. Approved unanimously are the following officers:

  • Brian D. Pieninck, President and CEO of CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, named Co-Vice Chair
  • Christine Aspell, Managing Partner for the Baltimore Office of KPMG LLP, named Co-Vice Chair
  • Janet Currie, President of Bank of America Greater Maryland, named Secretary
  • Martin P. Brunk, Baltimore Office Leader for RSM US LLP, will continue his role as Treasurer. All officers will hold their positions until 2025.

“With Mohan, our new slate of officers, and a board of business and civic leaders deeply invested in the region’s success, we’re well on our way to positioning the GBC to lead in shaping our economic future and driving collective impact to tackle the region’s most intractable challenges,” said Mark Anthony Thomas, Chief Executive Officer of the GBC.
